Austin, TX: Sugar Mama's Bakeshop
For this to be my first OFFICIAL bakery to review, I must say, I made a great choice! Austin, TX is known to have great food so I knew I should be able to find great desserts. After a little research, I stumbled upon Sugar Mama's Bakeshop, which is located off of 1st Street in the heart of Austin, TX.
If you are a fan of Cupcake Wars, this is definitely a place you want to check out, as this bakery was a Cupcake Wars winner in 2013. I wanted to try the winning cupcake flavors but unfortunately those flavors are only sold on the weekends.
I purchased two cupcakes and my favorite was the Frida, which is a Vegan chocolate cupcake, Stop the press! Vegan? Ummm, no. Initially, I wanted to pass but I was told that it didn't "taste" vegan. Surprisingly, I LOVED it! I was not hopeful since I haven't had much luck with tasty "-free" or vegan desserts. This cupcake is made with Valrhona chocolate with coffee liqueur frosting, sprinkled with cinnamon sugar. The cinnamon sugar provided a nice contrast with the chocolate and coffee flavor. The cake itself was very moist and not dense.
The second cupcake I tried was Jack's Lemon, which was a lemon cupcake with lemon buttercream icing. I am a huge fan of lemon based desserts so I have very high expectations, and Jack's Lemon did not disappoint. After the first bite, I immediately went back to my childhood to when I used to sneak Archway Classic Frosty Lemon cookies out of my grandmother's pantry (don't judge me). It was delicious! The cake itself was more dense than the Frida but it didn't take away from the flavor at all. There is a fine line between great lemon flavor and too much, and Sugar Mama's Bakeshop found the perfect balance.
I definitely recommend that you check out Sugar Mama's Bakeshop if you are ever in the Austin area.
Definitely WORTH the run!
